A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the medical care of women and their reproductive systems, whereas an obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in the health of a mother and her baby during pregnancy, birth, and post-natal care. A woman may choose to see an OB/Gyn, which is an abbreviation for physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. A gynecologist is specially trained to screen for and treat menstrual cycle problems, breast disease, family planning, infertility, hormones, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and risk factors for gynecologic cancers. Females should see a gynecologist or OB/GYN between the ages of 13 and 15. Beginning at the age of 21, all women should see their doctor once a year for an annual exam that focuses on breast and pelvic health as well as any other issues that may arise. Women who begin sexual activity before the age of 21 should start their annual exams earlier to allow for STD screening and contraception counseling. Every woman should schedule an annual exam. Preventive care and early screening are critical for detecting many disease processes early when treatment is most effective. Annual exams also foster trust between a woman and her provider, which is critical if health problems arise.
