Kangaroo Mother Care (also known as skin-to-skin care) is a basic method of caring for newborn infants in which the mother uses her own body temperature to keep her infant warm. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is especially beneficial when nursing infants with low birth weight (infants with a birth weight below 2500 g). KMC meets the infant's basic survival needs, such as warmth, stimulation, breast milk, love, and protection from the mother. KMC has become an extremely important method of caring for these high-risk infants, with 20 million low birth weight (LBW) infants born worldwide each year. Attempts to reduce the prevalence of low birth weight infants in developing countries have failed.
