Kangaroo Mother Care (also known as skin-to-skin care) is a simple, straightforward method of caring for newborn infants in which the mother uses her own body temperature to keep her infant warm. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is especially beneficial when nursing low birth weight infants (infants with a birth weight below 2500 g). KMC meets the infant's basic survival needs, such as the mother's warmth, stimulation, breast milk, love, and protection. With 20 million low birth weight (LBW) infants born worldwide each year, KMC has become an extremely important method of caring for these high-risk infants. Attempts to reduce the prevalence of low birth weight infants in poor countries have been unsuccessful.
